Plans drawn up to change pedestrian crossings in Glasgow to be set at green man

Plans have been drawn up to change Glasgow's pedestrian crossings to be automatically set at green man - giving pedestrians preference over vehicles.

The plans are contained within a Glasgow City Council report into new measures to help enable physical distancing in the city post-lockdown.

The report outlines the measures that the Council is progressing to enable more space for people in the city centre, local neighbourhoods and on the wider road network once the current lockdown is relaxed.

Managing the road network differently will, the report states, "help prevent a second wave of Covid-19 and allow the city economy to start to recover".

And in terms of the city centre, temporary measures for consideration include: "change pedestrian crossings to be automatically set to green man and requiring to be activated by vehicles, rather than on pedestrian demand".

The measure would allow for priority to be given to pedestrian space around transport hubs, core shopping streets and "any identified pedestrian pinch points".

Other measures for consideration in the city centre include selective road closures, removal of on street parking and the installation of additional street cycle parking.
