Plans approved to double Glasgow city centre population by 2035

Plans have been approved to double the population of Glasgow city centre by 2035.

After a 10-week public consultation period Glasgow’s City Centre Living Strategy has been given the green light by Glasgow City Council.

The strategy will be delivered through an action plan aimed at doubling the city centre population to 40,000 over the next 15 years, repurposing redundant commercial space for residential use, delivering high quality public spaces and attracting investment.

The Council says it plans to maintain a continuous dialogue with Glaswegians to support the development of the strategy.

Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "Glasgow has a famously vibrant city centre, offering so much to so many people.

"This strategy will build on its strengths to create a place where more people want to live and visit and businesses to locate and invest, not just as we recover from the Covid crisis but also for decades to come.

"The ultimate goal is the development of a more liveable city centre, capable of attracting a bigger, sustainable residential population to the very heart of Glasgow."

Glasgow’s City Centre Living Strategy includes plans to stimulate the housing market and attract inward investment in the city centre within the strategy - with 1,700 units granted detailed consent with planning applications submitted for nearly 2,000 units.

While 4,800 units within the city centre have been classified as 'potential'.
