Plans approved for major Toxteth housing development

Plans for a major new housing development in Toxteth have been given the green light this morning - despite objections from a number of people who live nearby.

West Tree Estates Limited want to demolish houses on the north side of Ducie Street in order to build 45 apartments.

A further 35 apartments are to be build on the south side of the street - land that has sat vacant since houses were flattened in 2009.

According to developers, the site will see 'a blend of new apartments built behind elegant Victorian facades, with new homes on the opposite side of the road offering a modern interpretation of a terraced street'

These will be one and two bedroom flats, and will feature a mix of homes to rent and for sale.

Speaking on behalf of the architect, Adam Hall told the Liverpool Council's planning committee the new development would provide accommodation that is attractive to local people - as well as 'build on the renaissance achieved by the community in Granby'.

But a number of people who live in the area say the plans are not in keeping with Granby.

Roger Hill, who voiced his objection at the meeting, said: "There has been a very strong swell in the community that this development is just not suited to this area.

"Granby has had its trials and tribulations over a number of decades and it is an area which requires careful and considerate treatment. I don't think this is what we are currently receiving."

There were also concerned raised about the size of the apartments.

Local resident Richard Hebden said: "We need houses for families, not tiny flats with no lifts."

Plans were deferred at a meeting earlier this month, so that developers could consult with residents.

West Tree Estates say such consultation has taken place - but members of the local community have said otherwise.

Ed Gommon said: "To say there has been consultation is outrageous. We were given a presentation - only after we asked for a meeting - where we had more information thrown at us."

Developers have also said people who live in the immediate area will have priority - both when it comes to onsite jobs and access to the apartments.
