Plans anounced for Beeston building after 'heartbreaking' nursery closure

A Beeston nursery has closed - and fresh plans have been tabled to turn it into accommodation.

A spokesperson for the Young Rascals Day Nursery said the closure "has been heartbreaking for both staff and parents".

They confirmed the nursery would not relocate.

Revised proposals have been tabled to turn the building, in City Road, into a house in multiple occupation (HMO).

It follows a previously-approved application and the proposals for the building, which had operated as a nursery for decades, have been tweaked.

Abi Saunders, owner of Abi Saunders Architects, the planning agent, said: "We have just extended it very slightly on the ground floor and slightly on the first floor, just to give better space inside and put a dormer on the back."

The building is opposite the City Road car park in the town.

Explaining who the HMO will target, Mrs Saunders said "it doesn't have to be students", adding: "It means a separate household in each room in legal and planning terms."

A planning statement, included in a planning statement submitted on behalf of JH Hofton Trust and PM Read, clarified the property would include eight bedrooms with a single and two-story extension planned to the back.

It read: "The proposed scheme aims to increase the existing accommodation whilst working sympathetically with the original property.

"The site is not located within a conservation area and the existing building is neither listed nor considered a heritage asset.

"The proposals will not affect the street scene and the property will largely be retained as existing.

"The proposed extension will be built in matching materials and the design and proportions are in keeping with the existing property.

"The proposed single-storey extension is to be finished with a high-performance flat roofing system to keep the height to a minimum."

The property was originally a family home but has operated as a children's nursery since the early 1990s.

Plans for the extension and change of use have been submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council.

If this latest application isn't successful, the landlord will proceed to continue with the initial plans given the go-ahead.
