Plans announced to restore Southport Market to its former glory

Plans have been revealed to restore Southport Market to its former glory.

DB8 Designs, along with Dawnvale Group and Sefton Council are working to transform the historical market, drawing on influences from other successful UK and European food markets.

Southport Market, which launched in 1857, retains its classic Victorian form after a recent renovation, but the new plans call for further change.

The market will focus on Southport ’s coastal influences, sourcing ingredients from local producers and offering an event space to create a social hub in the seaside town.

The designers are set to draw inspiration for the market from the town’s iconic locations including the pier, the Botanical Gardens, the fair and the Colonnades.

Lee Birchall, director of DV8 Designs, said: “I’m delighted to be working with such a talented and experienced team on this innovative project for Southport.

“We bring our extensive experience and specialist knowledge of the sector to the table, along with our passion and our true Northern pride.

“The re-design of Southport Market space will be integral to the regeneration of this fantastic destination, and we are so proud to be involved.”

The market hall is set to feature a ‘reclaimed’ aesthetic, drawing on the ornate ironwork and exposed brick within the venue already.

There are also plans to incorporate elements of a funfair into the designs including carousel horses and circus tent-style canvases.
