Plans announced for 'world-class' 8500-capacity stadium in Edinburgh

PLANS for a "world-class" indoor stadium in Edinburgh have been announced by the firm behind the 02 arena in London.

AEG entertainment is seeking planning approval for an 8500-capacity indoor arena at Edinburgh Park for live music and entertainment, which will reportedly cement Edinburgh’s reputation as “a destination for culture and global tourism”.

The business park to the west of the capital is next to a rail and tram station, as well as several bus connections and motorway links for easy access. The proposals also includes parking and infrastructure development at the site, as well as food and bar amenities.

Alex Hill, president and CEO of AEG Europe, told The Scotsman: “AEG is thrilled to announce this spectacular new arena for Edinburgh.

“It’s a location with immense potential, amplified by Parabola’s transformative development and regeneration of Edinburgh Park.

“The much needed 8,500-capacity arena will bring world-class live music and entertainment to Edinburgh, further cementing its reputation as a destination for culture and global tourism.

“We look forward to this development becoming an integral part of the local community and complementing one of the best cities in the world for the arts and live entertainment.”

Edinburgh council leader Cammy Day, meanwhile, said: "Great to see plans for an Edinburgh Arena at Edinburgh Park. Great opportunity for Edinburgh. Looking forward to consultation and plans being submitted."

The preliminary application can be seen on the Edinburgh council website, with public consultation being held on December 4 and January 9 2024 from 3pm-7pm at 1 New Park Square.

If approved, work is expected to begin in early 2025 with the first live events taking place in 2027.
