Planning permission in principle granted for Coatbridge factory site housing plan

Planning permission in principle has been granted for the conversion of a Coatbridge factory site into a residential development of around 60 houses.

An application from Paloma Capital for a potential new use of the Tannoy factory location at Palacecraig Street in Kirkshaws was agreed by councillors on North Lanarkshire’s planning committee at their recent virtual meeting.

The site owners had told Lanarkshire Live last year that the housebuilding application would be a “back-up plan” as they sought a future new tenant for the continued industrial use of the premises.

Councillors agreed with planning officials that the residential use, although “contrary to the local development plan... is unlikely to significantly adversely affect the surrounding residential, industrial and business areas”.

Indicative plans show vehicle access from the south-east of the site, on Palacecraig Street, and conditions were imposed regarding the number of parking spaces required for each size of house and the provision of parking courts for flats.

A condition requiring a £26,000 contribution to upgrade the nearby Mossneuk Street play area, or alternatively provision of on-site play equipment, was also attached; while remaining details of any specific housing plans would be considered via another future planning application.

Paloma Capital first shared the housing proposals during a public consultation exercise a year ago, but said the planning application process would “run in parallel” with efforts to find a new tenant following audio manufacturer Tannoy’s 2016 announcement of plans to close the Coatbridge factory.

The company stated at that time: “The Coatbridge site has always been industrial and so we have started our search for a replacement tenant who can take up the space post-2023.

“In the meantime, we need to make sure we have all our bases covered and if the market is such that we cannot find a new tenant we have an alternative use, in the form of housing.”
