Planning a summer driving trip? Expect to pay more for gas, forecast says

You might want to budget a little extra for gas if you're planning a summer road trip.

The Energy Information Agency on Tuesday released its forecast of summer fuel prices, which showed gasoline is expected to go up 10 percent.

A gallon of gas will average $2.46, compared with $2.23 last summer. That's largely because crude oil prices are expected to rise.

Meanwhile, natural gas prices are expected to rise over the next few years. Electricity produced from natural gas will decline from an average of 34 percent in 2016 to an average of 32 percent in 2017 and 2018, the report said.

Coal's percentage of electricity generation will go up slightly, from 30 percent in 2017 to 31 percent in both 2017 and 2018.

While hydropower's share of electricity generation is expected to be unchanged from 2016 to 2018, wind and solar are projected to be more in demand as sources of electricity.
