Planned Liverpool John Lennon Airport bank holiday strike to be suspended

A planned strike that looked set to cause chaos over the bank holiday weekend is set to be suspended.

Around 200 workers were due to walk out on what is the airport's busiest weekend in a row over pay and safety issues.

The dispute centres on baggage handling and airport workers for Swissport, who are represented by the GMB union.

The staff involved in the dispute work on two separate contracts - the Swissport Easyjet contract and Swissport mainline.

But just two days before the strike was set to begin the union has announced it will be called off.

A union spokesman told the ECHO today that after two days of negotiations with Swissport's labour relations chief Mick Whiteley, GMB representatives will meet with two sets of affected workers tomorrow to recommend that the strike action planned for this weekend is suspended.

This is to allow time for members to vote on a new proposal being offered by Swissport - which the union is recommending is accepted by workers.

The union said it will keep people informed of what is decided and whether the new proposal from Swissport is accepted.

News of the suspension of the strike will be welcomed by the hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers set to jet out from the airport on what is routinely the busiest weekend in its annual calendar.
