Fireworks displays at planetariums have become increasingly popular as many fireworks festivals have been either postponed or canceled as a result of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Such events are known as hanabirium, a portmanteau of hanabi, the Japanese word for fireworks, and planetarium.

About 5,000 fireworks are projected on a screen overhead in the planetarium of the Yokkaichi Municipal Museum in Mie Prefecture, offering its visitors a new kind of experience.

The projection, which was created by the show's production company, also explains topics such as the history of fireworks.

Only 40 of the planetarium's 140 seats are available to visitors as an infection prevention measure. The event is scheduled to run through Sept. 6.

"It's something both kids and adults can enjoy," said one of the local residents who visited with her family.
