
The reduction of flights triggered by the coronavirus epidemic has created the rare sight at Haneda Airport of grounded aircraft lined up on its apron.
The planes form two rows, even during the daytime when many aircraft are often flying in the sky, a scene said to be quite unique.
According to a tally by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, as of Thursday, about 1,030 planes departed from and arrived in Japan between March 22 and 28, down about 70% from three weeks before.
"The number of planes [parked] on the apron increases at night. We may need another apron if this situation continues," an official of the ministry's East Japan Civil Aviation Bureau said.
