Plane seen carving strange flight path in skies over Stockport, Wythenshawe and Chorlton

A plane has been seen flying a series of bizarre routes over South Manchester this weekend.

The skies have been unrecognisable in recent weeks due to a huge decrease in flights during the coronavirus pandemic.

And while the sound of the odd cargo jet is still fairly common, despite being so close to an international airport, air traffic has been minimal.

But one small jet has caught the eyes of people in Stockport, Wythenshawe and Chorlton as it spent hours circling over head on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The plane, a Partenavia P.68B Victor light aircraft has been repeatedly looping over the north west for the last four days.

It landed at Hawarden Aerodrome near Chester after flying from Belgium, on May 6.

The plane has since been flying laps over Cheshire East and south Manchester, clearly taking advantage of the lack of air traffic.

On Sunday, flying at a altitude of 1,600ft, it repeatedly flew over Stockport and surrounding suburbs for around two and a half hours before returning to Hawarden.

It is not clear why the aircraft was taking such a strange flight path or who it is owned by - with flight data stating it is a privately owned plane.

However similar flights in other parts of the country have been confirmed as carrying out aerial surveys or training, making the most of the empty skies.

A spokesperson from Hawarden Aerodrome confirmed the aircraft had departed from the airfield, but could not confirm the nature of the flight.

The National Air Traffic Control Service (NATS) has been contacted for comment.
