Plane passenger slammed as he claimed woman 'reeked' on his flight

If you've ever flown on a plane before, you'll know that it can be a tight squeeze, but you just have to hope that your seatmate is pleasant enough and entertain yourself for the duration. Small seats and stuffiness do not make for the best atmosphere, but you have to dream of the destination.

But one man felt like he couldn't do that with the woman he was sitting next to, and instead, was furious that she "reeked", heading online to complain about the way he felt about her perfume.

He said that the odour left him feeling "sick to his stomach", so much so that he felt that he had no choice but to confront her about the smell.

In a resurfaced post on Reddit, the man claimed: "I had been travelling for 20 hours, and after a 3-hour delay on my final 1-hour flight, a pretty, preppy young lady sits in the middle seat, with me in the window.

"She already reeked of perfume, but she pulls out a heavily odorific hand sanitiser and slathers herself. I am literally sick to my stomach, but hold my tongue, thinking it would wane soon. It didn't.

"Minutes later, as I peek out from under my mask to adjust the air vent, she asks if I'll open the blind for her to see. I say yes, but grumpy me let out a 'your fragrance is very strong'. Sorry, she replies sheepishly."

He said that he had to "bear stomach sickness in exhausted silence for the rest of the flight."

The man was later confronted by the woman when their plane landed as she accused him of making her feel "uncomfortable" and not taking into account anything she might be going through - as she claimed she currently has an impaired sense of smell herself.

He added: "When we land, she turns to me and claims she has no sense of smell, that I made her flight very uncomfortable, and I should be more sensitive to what other people are going through.

"I keep my cool but tell her she should not use fragrances next time she flies. Honestly, the moment I left the plane, I felt better.

Some commenters agreed that he should've said something if he felt uncomfortable, but others said he was wrong to criticise her when he knew she would be unable to do anything about it at that moment in time.

Someone wrote: "I empathise with your discomfort, probably compounded with the fact that you were cranky from a long day of flying and flight delays. It feels like you took out that frustration on your seatmate and purposely embarrassed her when she didn't have any bad intentions."

"You propose the idea that moving seats might have hurt her more - trust me, what you did was more hurtful. Please talk to the flight attendant and switch seats next time."

"What's the point of telling her in the first place?", another fumed. "Did you think she'd go into the aeroplane bathroom and rinse her body in hopes of washing it off? All you did was make her feel embarrassed."

But others agreed with the man and said they would have done the same thing in his position.

A Redditor wrote: "If she has no sense of smell, she shouldn't be applying perfume herself and needs to be told that it's too much."
