Plane passenger opens emergency exit door and tries to jump on landing

An El Al passenger has tried to open an emergency door and jump out of the plane after it landed.

Two crew members held the male passenger, who was hanging on the door, and stopped him from jumping off the Boeing 747 airliner which took off at Tel Aviv, Airlive reports.

The incident happened when the 400 passengers were leaving the plane at around 9am on April 10 at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.

The man, who was identified by El Al as an US citizen, was arrested by local police after ground crews used a ladder to rescue him.

El Al said in a statement: "A passenger with American citizenship opened one of the rear passenger doors that are not intended for passengers.

"Two El Al crew members who noticed the passenger were cool and resourceful when they grabbed the passenger who was hanging from the door and prevented him from jumping from a great height and thus saved his life."

The height from the door of a Boeing 747-400 aircraft to the tarmac is about 5.2 metres (17 feet).

One El Al ground crew worker who witnessed the incident said the passenger scrambled down the ladder and tried to flee, but was stopped by security and detained for questioning.

El Al's CEO Gonen Usishkin praised the crew for 'preventing a serious incident and the loss of human life'.
