Plane from Oslo tried to land in Manchester - but it was so windy the pilot headed back to Norway

A flight travelling from Norway had to travel all the way back to Oslo when it was unable to land at Manchester Airport because of Storm Ciara.

The SAS flight SK4609 was due to land here in Manchester earlier this morning but had to divert back to Norway due to particularly strong cross winds.

The airline said the pilot attempted to land but was unable to and instead headed back to Oslo, where the Airbus A320-251N landed safely.

The 48 passengers on board are now being re-booked on the first available flights back to Manchester.

“The problem was the strong winds,” a spokesperson for the airline said.

“Earlier today we had one flight trying to land a couple of times but it was not able to. This was because of the cross winds.”

The SAS flight wasn’t the only one to experience problems in the midst of the storm today.

Hundreds of passengers on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Barbados had to be diverted to Scotland when their plane was unable to land in Manchester.

Flight VS78 attempted to land at Manchester Airport twice but the pilot was forced to divert to Glasgow because of strong winds.

The 391 passengers and one child are now being brought back to Manchester via bus, the airline confirmed.

Around 20 flights - both inbound and outbound - have been cancelled at Manchester Airport today, while six have been diverted due to the weather.
