Plane crashes on Scots island beach as rescue crews scramble to save pilot

Emergency crews were scrambled into action to rescue a pilot after his aircraft crash landed on a Scots beach.

The alarm was shortly before 3pm on Tuesday, April 20, after the white plane came down at Shain Bay on the Isle of Jura.

The pilot, who was flying solo, miraculously escaped serious injury after the emergency landing but his aircraft was left in a perilous location.

A local rescue crew were flown to the scene where they helped move the wreckage further up the beach to avoid the rising tide.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: “Just before 3pm today (20 April), HM Coastguard received a 999 call from the pilot of a light aircraft that had carried out an emergency landing at Shian Bay on the Isle of Jura.

“Jura Coastguard Rescue Team and the coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick that was training nearby, were sent.

“The pilot, who was the only person on board, was not injured and needed no further medical attention.”

An investigation into the cause of the emergency landing by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch will take place while police were also informed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.05 pm on Tuesday April 20, 2021, police were advised that a light aircraft with one person on board – a male pilot – had crashed on to the beach at Shain Bay, Isle of Jura, around 3pm this afternoon.

“The pilot was not injured. Inquiries into the incident are continuing.”
