Rescue ongoing as two trapped after plane crashes into woodland shortly after take-off

A plane has crashed into woodland shortly after take off from Rochester Airport, in Kent leaving two people trapped inside.

An eyewitness said the light aircraft had left from the airport in Chatham before it was seen coming down in woodland nearby.

Emergency services are at the scene and are working to free the pilot and passenger who are currently still inside the plane.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Flights in and out of the airport have been stopped according to reports and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch has launched an investigation.

Rochester Airport's manager Kelvin Carr told the Mirror: "A plane took off from Rochester but landed up elsewhere.

"The AAIB have been called and I can't say any more that that."

Kent Fire and Rescue has confirmed to the Mirror it has firefighters at the scene.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 11.01am on Monday, 31 October to a report of a light aircraft collision in Common Road, Chatham.

"The plane is reported to have come to a stop inside a wooded area.

"Officers are at the scene along with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service.

"Two people are reported to be inside the plane.

"Emergency services are working together to ensure those inside the plane are brought to safety.

"No injuries are believed to have been reported.

"Common Road is currently closed while the incident is dealt with."

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is also currently at the scene, a spokeswoman confirmed.

She said: "Two fire engines, an all-terrain-unit, and Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s technical rescue team has been sent to the scene.

"Crews are working alongside partner agencies to rescue two people from the aircraft."
