Plane carrying 'Resign Sturgeon' banner over Glasgow and Edinburgh slammed

A pro-Union campaign has been slammed for arranging a fly-past calling for Nicola Sturgeon to resign during lockdown.

Billboard adverts in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen appeared this morning with #ResignSturgeon emblazoned on them, while later in the day a small plane was spotted over the Capital and and Scotland's largest city pulling a banner with the same slogan.

Anti-independence group The Majority claimed responsibility in a press release sent to the Record today.

Organisers claimed they were motivated by the Scottish Government’s botched handling of complaints made against Alex Salmond - a legal row that cost the taxpayer at least £600,000.

But the stunt has provoked mixed reactions on social media, with one Twitter user calling the organisers "fannies".

One Twitter user, @lalalauramac, said: "Anyone else see the plane cutting about with the big banner on the back saying Nicola Sturgeon should resign? Some folk have too much money."

Another, @chazforbes898, observed: "Small plane flew over Edinburgh pulling a banner saying Sturgeon Resign. Obvious breach of Covid restrictions.'

While @KealinKato commented: "Walked to the office just now - there’s a plane flying around the city with the sign Resign Sturgeon. Love to see people being so subtle."

And @aliveNamplified concluded: "What arse hired a plane to fly around Edinburgh with a banner on the back saying Sturgeon Resign? This isn't Manchester United. Do you think she's gonna look up and think 'ken what, now that I've seen it in the air I might as well'. Fannies."

But the organisers insisted they wanted Sturgeon to do "the right thing" by quitting during a public health emergency.

Mark Devlin of the Majority said: "We represent the silent majority of people in Scotland, who are angry and frustrated by Nicola Sturgeon’s shenanigans bringing international shame on Scotland.

"The Scottish public deserve a parliament and First Minister above reproach and want the Scottish Government to focus on health, education, jobs and the pandemic."

Scotland Matters - which claims to be a "non-party campaign" in favour of the Union, also backed the fly-past.

Spokesman Alan Mathers said: "We call on the First Minister to do the right thing for Scotland, resign and let us focus on recovery from the pandemic.

"She has done great damage to our country and Parliament’s reputation, here and abroad by conducting an undignified, very public dispute with her former SNP colleague and preventing the Salmond enquiry from seeing evidence that is crucial to a proper investigation."
