Plane carrying PPE arrives in Northern Ireland from Turkey

A plane carrying new equipment for NHS staff - including 125,000 PPE gowns - has landed in Northern Ireland.

The 30 tonnes of personal protective equipment (PPE) arrived into Belfast International Airport on Monday night.

The new kits arrive as the Northern Ireland Executive prepare to set out a pathway to exit the Covid-19 restrictions.

The PPE, which was loaded onto a plane at Istanbul Airport, and was purchased and supplied by Hospital Services Ltd, are being distributed to Belfast and in Derry hospitals.

Yesterday, junior minister Declan Kearney said that Northern Ireland was "not out of the woods yet" in the fight against the deadly virus.

First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill are expected to outline the blueprint to the Assembly today (Tuesday).

While a final version had not been formally signed off by Monday  afternoon, with a few remaining details still to be agreed, ministers were confident it will be completed in time to present to MLAs today.

Meanwhile, a further three deaths of patients with Covid-19 were reported by  the Department of Health on Monday, taking the total in the region to 438.
