Plan to convert abandoned Edinburgh farm into primary school and sports pitches

Plans have been revealed for a new primary school with a health centre and sports pitch in Edinburgh.

The school will have 21 classrooms and will be able to cater for at least 566 pupils.

The City of Edinburgh Council recently decided that there was no need for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the proposed new school on land south east of Meadowfield Farm on Turnhouse Road.

The proposal for the new school with adjoining nursery follows a larger application to build 2500 homes, hotels, restaurants, retail shops and leisure facilities at the site.

The City of Edinburgh Council’s development management committee reported in March 2021 that the planned new development is not supported by National Planning Policy (NPF 3).

However, the council identified that new education infrastructure would be required on site.

They called for additional secondary school capacity for 420 pupils at the proposed site and also a new 21 class primary school for 566 pupils.

The council estimate that should the developer proceed the primary education infrastructure at Meadowfield Farm will cost them £5,846,443 and £3,302,395 for the secondary schooling.

The City of Edinburgh Council decided an EIA was not required on July 19 and a formal planning application is now expected to follow.

It said: “The proposal is unlikely to cause any significant adverse environmental effects by virtue of its nature, size or location.

“The proposal is located within an area identified for development in the Edinburgh Local Development Plan and the detailed design and accompanying supporting information evidenced in the planning submission reference can minimise and address any localised impact(s).”
