Plan to build flats to house former servicemen

More than a dozen garages are set to be knocked down so flats can be built in Stapleford to house former servicemen.

Plans have been tabled to build five one-bedroom homes, in Oakfield Road, and the application submission follows a public consultation.

Chair of Broxtowe Borough Council's housing committee, Councillor Teresa Cullen, said: “I’m very pleased with the progress made on this important scheme so far.

"It’s a sad reality that ex-service personnel can face many difficulties, including mental health issues, which can make it hard for them to access adequate housing."

Up to 16 garages are in line for demolition and the plan is for the flats to be available to rent.

Ex-servicemen will be able to register to live in the accommodation.

Work could start in the autumn if planning permission is approved.

Vice-chair of the council's housing committee, Councillor Barbara Carr, added: “The council is working with a locally-based armed forces charity to ensure that, should planning approval be granted, the homes will be allocated to ex-service personnel and that bespoke support is provided to the new residents.”

If all goes to plan, the first tenants could move in next year.

The accommodation will be available to a variety of people who used to work in the services - including the navy and army.

The project forms part of the borough council's housing delivery plan to meet social and affordable housing need.

The aim is to build a minimum of 230 homes in the borough over the next 10 years on council-owned land - including brownfield, under-utilised and derelict sites.

The authority's housing committee will receive an update when it meets virtually this week.

Planning documents add: "The removal of the garage block and addition of new apartments for ex-service personnel is a sensitive addition to the context of the street and provides safe places for these valued members of the community to live and engage with the community."

Five parking spaces are designed to serve the flats.

Rayner Davies Architects drew up the plans on the council's behalf.
