A plan to build a development with 134 beds for student flats on the banks of the Water of Leith has been given the green light by planning officials.
The development would be located on the site of a car dealership and garage on Lanark Road in the south west of the city.
The building would have a main office, reception, gym and communal area as well as apartments of various sizes.
A report from officials to Edinburgh council's Development Management Sub-Committee noted the nearest student accommodation was one mile away on Gorgie Road.
Describing the development, KR Architects say is "a dramatic site which is currently a car repair garage and forecourt.
"The site was ecologically sensitive and being located on the banks of the Water of Leith meant extensive flood modelling was required."
They add: "The consented scheme is accessed through a pend from Lanark Road where the main entrance is situated in the heart of the building.
"The location next to the mature and large woodland of Craiglockhart Dell gives a spectacular backdrop on one of the main routes in to and out of the city."
The report says: "The proposal is acceptable in principle and is of a suitable design, form and scale which will not have an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the surrounding area."
It adds: "Given the lack of purpose-built student accommodation nearby to the site and the existing varied character, it is not considered that the proposal will disrupt the existing community balance or have a detrimental impact on the character and residential amenity of the locality.
"The site is well served by existing transport links and will result in the creation of a satisfactory living environment."
The planning application will be discussed at an meeting of the Development Management Sub-Committee next week.
