Plan for new Co-op store in 'odd' location in Woodthorpe

Plans have been put forward for a new Co-op store in an 'odd' location in Woodthorpe.

The shop is proposed for the former Sunnyhome haulage yard site in Greendale Road.

But people in the area said they thought it was an 'odd' location, saying they were worried about traffic.

Sales assistant Sue Brent, 49, who lives near Arno Vale School, said: “It’s just a bit of an odd place for a Co-op and round here gets filled with traffic before and after school.

“A shop just down the road is handy for loads of people but when there’s nowhere to park your car or you're sitting for ages in your own car in traffic on your own street, that’s not fair.”

Affordable homes are being built across from the site.

Access to the new shop is proposed from Arno Vale Road, with a car park having 13 customer spaces.

Other people also had their say on the plan.

Retired Ian Talks, who is 75 and lives nearby, said: “I’m not happy.

"We go to Arnold a lot [for shopping] because, luckily, we have a car.

"There’s a lot of people that drop the children off [to the school] so lots of cars come by here.

“It’s congested, the road will be cluttered with traffic. I’m quite shocked and surprised, there’s no excuse for more traffic.”

Another local resident, who asked not to be named, added: “It’ll be helpful having a store just on your doorstep, no doubt about that, but I’m concerned about the traffic and even the noise.

"I'm guessing most people who live here will think that, too.

“It gets awful round here sometimes and, with a new store, I’m guessing it would be even worse. The last thing you want is an accident every other day.”

Plans for the new store have been submitted to Gedling Borough Council for consideration.

The documents show the store is intended to be a Co-op.
