Plan for £25m hotel and shops development in Trongate given green light by Glasgow City Council

Planning permission has been granted by Glasgow City Council for a new mixed-use development that will dramatically change the face of the Trongate area of the city.

The development will see the demolition of the old RBS property and ground floor shops on Argyle Street (opposite McDonalds) as well as the Oriental Bar on Hutcheson Street.

With a new 157-bed hotel/aparthotel, public house and retail units erected in their place.

The proposals were submitted to the council back in November of last year.

With applicant Caledon Properties Ltd stating how the new building will "help contribute towards improved social cohesion which will have economic benefits for the Trongate area and the wider context of Glasgow".

The plans illustrate that the 12-storey hotel will have its reception on the seventh floor, with retail units occupying the ground level.

And, once completed, the development is set to provide more than 100 full-time jobs according to developers.

A historic quarter of Glasgow and once the beating heart of the city, the Trongate area is now blighted with empty shops and derelict spaces.
