'Plan C' with 'masks in all indoor spaces and NHS Covid app for pubs' proposed

Ministers are already working on 'Plan C' restrictions that could be introduced in the New Year with tougher curbs if Covid cases continue to surge, it is reported.

Boris Johnson has already suffered a backlash over Plan B rules aimed at tackling Omicron, which is predicted to become the dominant variant and could be more resistant to existing vaccines.

Officials are now reportedly working on 'Plan C', which would go a step further by reintroducing the NHS Covid app check-in for people going to pubs and restaurants, making face masks compulsory in all indoor spaces and using vaccine passports for more venues.

Mr Johnson’s Plan B has been criticised by businesses as well as many Conservative MPs and even some scientists who claim the measures won’t make an impact on the spread of Omicron.

Plan C measures include using the NHS App to check in to bars and restaurants (PA)

It now means that people will need to wear face masks at indoor venues like cinemas and theatres or churches, and from next Monday new work from home guidelines will be introduced.

MPs will vote next Tuesday on the plans, with a string of Tory MPs openly criticising plans to introduce vaccine passports.

Businesses have seen themselves hit in what for many is their busiest period of the year over Christmas and New Year - but Mr Johnson says he hopes the measures will “slow the spread”.

The prime minister is expected to face a backlash from his own party during the vote next Tuesday, with the Daily Mail claiming that at least 60 MPs could go against him.

The report claims ministers are considering 'Plan C' rules such as forcing customers to use the NHS Covid app again to go to a pub or restaurant, making face masks mandatory in all indoor spaces, and having to show a vaccine passport at more venues.

It comes with Mr Johnson under pressure over the alleged Christmas party at Downing Street last December that he had denied took place.

There have been calls for him to resign and a poll has shown 63% thought he should go, it is reported.

A senior Tory source told the "I think we will get it through with opposition support, but there will be such a bloodbath within our party when the dissatisfaction sets in."

Tory MP David Warburton was one of many to attack the Plan B saying it was "confused, contradictory, arbitrary and wholly disproportionate".

He said the "insanity needs to end" with the new rules not stopping people from meeting at the pub after work and that it has been suggested that people could take off their masks to sing.
