Plan C measures being drawn up for tougher Covid rules in England, say reports

The Government is reported to be working on its Plan C for fighting Omicron variant coronavirus in England if new Plan B regulations don't work.

The latest rules for England come into force today with masks now mandatory in more public spaces.

Travel rules are in effect and will be reviewed within days to see if they are working.

And new work from home orders start from Monday, with reports there will be restrictions on visits to care homes.

Covid passports will become mandatory for some venues after a vote on Tuesday.

But the Government is reported to be already planning what will be the next stage, according to the Daily Mail, Telegraph and the Mirror.

Plan C is reported to be looking at making vaccine passports mandatory for all pubs and restaurants and making face masks compulsory in all indoor spaces.

Table service could also return to all eating and drinking venues.

At his press briefing this week Boris Johnson said they were looking at ways to encourage more people to get a vaccine.

Having to prove you have had a jab to get into any pub, cafe or restaurant could be seen as a way to do that.

Professor Neil Ferguson, SAGE adviser to the Government and architect of the first national lockdown said new national lockdowns cannot now be ruled out.

The Government could skip straight from Plan C to lockdown - closing some venues and telling people to stay home except for a few specified reasons such as shopping and medical appoitments.

Whether the Government moves to Plan C, or lockdown, will depend on the spread of Omicron in the next two weeks and whether we see a surge in people going into hospital and intensive care - as well as a surge in deaths.

Plan C could also see a return of social distancing measures such as the Rule of Six - potentially putting an end to New Year parties.

The Government will take tougher measures to stop the NHS from collapse.

The Government said Plan B rules would be reviewed by January 5 at the latest - but could happen sooner if necessary.
