Feb. 01--A 24-year-old Plainfield man was killed Sunday morning when the car he was riding in went out of control, flipped several times and crashed through a wooden fence in Joliet, authorities said.
The crash claimed the life of John Burns, of the 6500 block of Bazz Drive, Joliet police said.
The driver of the car, a 24-year-old man from Plainfield, was being treated for injuries at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and charges against him were pending, Joliet Police Deputy Chief Edgar Gregory said.
"This was a horrific crash," Gregory said.
A witness saw the car traveling north on County Line Road just north of Black Road at a high rate of speed, Gregory said. The driver lost control, went off the roadway, corrected and then jumped a curb off westbound County Line Road, Gregory said.
He said the car ran over a small tree, struck a telephone utility box and hit another larger tree before flipping several times "end over end" and crashing through a wooden fence in the rear yard of a home in the 900 block of Hudson Drive, which backs up to County Line Road.
Gregory said homeowners heard the crash and saw the driver check the pulse of his passenger. Witnesses told police they then saw the driver climb out of the car, jump the fence and start running down Hudson Drive. Police were able to capture the driver when they arrived.
