Plain clothes police operation in city centre to continue into 2020

A plain clothes team working to catch drug dealers and knife carriers in the city centre is set to continue into 2020 after dealing with more than 1,000 offences in its first year.

The Operation Relentless team, comprising of four officers and one sergeant, was launched in December 2018 to target street offences in the city on an initial trial period of three to six months.

It has proved so successful that it is set to continue into 2020.

The team, who patrol on foot, has dealt with a range of offences including more than 900 drugs offences ranging from possession, to possession with intent to supply and production.

They have also fraud, public order, going equipped and 37 weapons possessions.

Officers have also arrested individuals circulated as wanted - either for offences such as rape, robbery, burglary, failing to appear at court, breaching of orders, wanted on recall to prison.

Officers have also received a Chief Constable's Commendation for their handling of a knife-related incident and arrest where they had to grapple a knife from a man's hand.

They had chased 18-year-old Tyrone Muir, of Ainsley Road, Aspley, after smelling cannabis smoke in Lister Gate on May 24.

When they caught up with him he had a lock knife in his hand, which officers had to prize from him.

He was given a 12-month community order and told to carry out 75 hours of unpaid work and pay £100 toward court costs when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court in September.

Inspector Anwaar Ahmed, who oversees the team, said: "Operation Relentless was set up to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in the city centre to help those who live, work and visit the city feel safe.

"The dedication of Operation Relentless officers have delivered fantastic results, making a real difference.

"An intelligence-led approach to stop and search has been very effective in reaping positive results whilst maintaining community confidence. The team's relentless pursuit of offenders will continue."
