Plaid Cymru postpones 2021 autumn conference due to fears of Covid peak in October

Plaid Cymru has said it will not go ahead with its planned party conference next month.

It was due to be held on October 15 and 16 in Aberystwyth.

Welsh Labour had already said that its 2021 conference, already postponed from March 2021 would not take place in November. It said at the time: "The virus has not gone away, and all indications are that we should expect a peak in cases and subsequent pressure on health and social care services in the autumn.

"It has not been an easy decision, but we think it is the right one at this time."

In plenary on Tuesday, the First Minister was asked by Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price whether other events, including rugby internationals planned for the same weekend as Labour was due to meet, should still go ahead. You can read about that here.

The First Minister said it was up to individual organisers and would depend on other mitigation methods. Covid passes will come into force for large events in Wales from October 11. However, on Tuesday the First Minister admitted that not everyone attending an event like the rugby would have their pass checked.

He told Members of the Senedd: "The public health adverse impacts of checking everybody's pass would outweigh the advantages of the pass itself because you would have long queues of people spending lots of time jostling next door to one another."

Announcing its decision, Alun Ffred Jones, Chair of Plaid Cymru said: " Plaid Cymru’s National Executive Committee met last night to discuss a recommendation from the party’s Steering Committee that our 2021 Annual Conference should be postponed.

"Following careful consideration, the NEC agreed with the recommendation and regrettably conference will not be taking place as planned in Aberystwyth on October 15-16 th . I know members will share our disappointment that we will not be meeting in person to discuss ideas and build towards the local elections next year.

"As a party we will always put the safety of our members, stakeholders, and communities first. The number of Covid cases remains high and current projections are that pressures on our hospitals will peak around the date of conference. It is vital that we play our part in keeping everyone safe.

"It is however important that we do come together at the earliest possible opportunity. The party will discuss options for hosting a virtual annual conference in the near future that will allow us to conduct the essential business of forming policy and electing representatives to the National Executive Committee."
