A Plaid Cymru MP has been suspended from the party after he was arrested on suspicion of assault.

Jonathan Edwards, who has represented the midwest-Wales constituency of Carmarthen East and Dinefwr since 2010, was detained on Wednesday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said a 44-year-old man from Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, had been arrested and released on bail while investigations continued.

Officers said no more information will be released at this stage.

Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru confirmed it had withdrawn the whip from Edwards.

This means he is suspended from the parliamentary party and must stand as an independent MP until it is restored.

A Plaid Cymru statement said: “The party whip has been withdrawn pending the conclusion of a police investigation.

“Mr Edwards has accepted this course of action and is complying fully with the police enquiries.

“It would be inappropriate for the party to comment further at this time.”

Father-of-two Edwards lives with his wife Emma in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, in south Wales.
