Places to go for a walk where you can avoid the crowds on Merseyside

With the current lockdown in place, plenty of people are taking the opportunity to keep busy by going for walks.

Under government rules people are allowed to leave home to exercise, providing they stay local and stick to social distancing rules.

We may not have any warm weather to keep our spirits up during this lockdown, but you can still enjoy a brisk walk if you wrap up warm.

With lockdown restrictions and social distancing guidelines still in place you might feel like avoiding areas that can get busy.

Some of the city's popular outdoor spaces can get busy, but there are plenty of places to enjoy where you're less likely to find a crowd. So if you want to get your steps in, while keeping your distance from others, here are some quieter spots across Merseyside to discover.

King's Parade and Liverpool Marina

Although town is still generally quieter than usual with lockdown restrictions in place, the Pier Head has a tendency to get busy with walkers at times.

If you can't find a quiet spot there, head a little further down to King's Parade by the arena, where you can walk by the river with fewer people around.

From here you can also enjoy a nice walk down down to the marina.

The green space off Jericho Lane can get busy when the sun comes out, but if you walk further along Otterspool Promenade up towards the Britannia, the pathway has plenty of space to keep your distance and you can find a nice spot if you want to sit for a moment and look out across the water.

You’ll also find Festival Gardens which has plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

Court Hey Park

Located in between Childwall and Broadgreen, this is another quiet park with some really pretty spots to discover. There’s a children’s playground and a woodland area which the little ones will enjoy exploring, and the grounds are filled with pretty wild flowers.

Overlooking the Dee Estuary this stretch of coastline is particularly beautiful and much quieter than West Kirby beach on a bright day.

A walk along the green banks above will give you some lovely views and there’s plenty of nature trails to explore where you can keep away from the crowds.

Speke Garston Coastal Reserve

Who’d have thought there would be such a pretty walk right by the airport? From this rambling stretch you can enjoy some really beautiful views of the river. There’s various trails to walk along, all filled with flowers and buzzing with wildlife when the weather gets warmer. A lovely spot where you rarely come across anyone else, but do wrap up warm as it can get chilly by the river.

Hightown coastal area

This little stretch of Hightown is worth seeking out if you want to enjoy views of the Irish Sea without the crowds at Crosby and Formby beaches.

If you’re lucky you might bag a seat on Bergers Bench looking out to sea. If not, there’s plenty of green space where you can watch the ships sail by. Keep an eye out for The Pebble sculpture along the walk, which people like to stand on for a picture.

Pickerings Pasture

This local nature reserve in Widnes overlooks the Mersey Gateway bridge and Runcorn Bridge. The pathway along the river can get busy with walkers and cyclists but there’s plenty of greenspace and pretty meadows to wander through.
