PKC forks out £97,000 for internet back-up

Perth and Kinross Council is set to fork out nearly £100,000 so staff have a second means of accessing the internet.

The local authority will pay Virgin Media £97,495 for the service.

Bosses say council staff needs another internet provider in case they ever find themselves unable to access the web using their existing provider.

The council is forking out the five-figure sum to ensure it has a secondary provider for a period of five years.

A description of the contract PKC has signed with Virgin Media published online states: “PKC is looking to procure a second dedicated internet connection into 2 High Street, Perth.

“The council has an existing internet circuit delivered using local Openreach infrastructure via Perth Exchange (ESPER), which represents a risk to PKC as a single point of failure, therefore second connection to provide further resilience and flexibility within the PKC network.”

The contract award notice says six other companies bid to be PKC’s second internet provider.
