PJ Proby's Yorkshire shows cancelled after comments on underage girls

Singer PJ Proby's two Yorkshire shows have been cancelled after comments he made about underage girls caused a storm of outrage.

The Texan singer made shocking comments in the Daily Mirror stating that he would only marry underage girls.

Now, his entire UK tour has been axed.

Proby has had a career spanning decades, and was very popular in both Britain and the US when The Beatles and Elvis Presley were in their prime.

He had scheduled a 19-date 'Farewell' tour for May and June of this year which included dates in Rotherham and Ilkley, but his controversial comments have meant that the entire tour has now been cancelled.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror , Proby said: “The last lady in my life was Elizabeth Conway in 1997. She was 13 when I met her. I don’t think there’ll be another because it’s against the law," he said whilst promoting his 20-date UK farewell tour.

“I won’t marry a girl I can’t raise from the age of 12, 13 or 14. I like that they’re young and fresh-looking and don’t come with baggage – nobody’s messed with their heart and broken it."

Despite stating his preference for 'young girls', Proby claims that none of his relationships have been with girls below the age of consent.

He said: "“I never dated young girls; I married every one I went out with. My first wife, Marianne Adams, was 16. My second, Judy Howard, was 17.

"Then I married a 21-year old girl from Blackpool named Dulcie Taylor. My marriages lasted no longer than three years.”

The support act for Proby's tour 'Sounds of The Fortunes' confirmed the tour cancellation on their website.
