After watching Burger King dominate social media during the summer with absurd new food mashups such as the Whopperito, one of the original fast-food innovators has decided to remind the king who is the boss of buzz.
Pizza Hut, a division of Yum! Brands (YUM) , on Monday debuted the "Grilled Cheese Stuffed Crust Pizza" across its more than 6,000 restaurants nationwide. The grilled cheese part of the pizza is found in the crust, which contains a fusion of mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Available through the fall, a large one-topping pizza will cost $12.99.
"The Grilled Cheese Stuffed Crust Pizza is a imagination of a classic grilled cheese and a traditional pizza," said David Timm, chief marketing officer at Pizza Hut, about the chain's shout out to one of America's biggest comfort foods. Hey, with tomato soup (a friend to the grilled cheese sandwich) season about to kick into gear, why shouldn't Pizza Hut try to ride the seasonal wave by marrying up a grilled cheese crust to tomato sauce?
Pizza Hut has been somewhat absent from the food mashup scene in the U.S. of late. Its last significant launch came in June last year with the "Hot Dog Bites" pizza, a cheese pizza that had mini hot dogs baked into the crust that went onto dazzle social media. The large one-topping pizza featured 28 hot dog bites baked into a pretzel crust that were group-sharing friendly. Tangy French's mustard was served as a dipping sauce for the dogs.
