Pitt (0-1) vs. Ohio (1-0) Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio is catching Pitt right in the middle of the sandwich. The Panthers got rolled by Virginia in the ACC opener, and they get a trip to Penn State to follow.

The Pitt running game didn’t get any room to breathe against the Cavaliers, and it was a rough overall effort without anything clicking in the second half.  How did the Panther D handle UVa QB Bryce Perkins? Fine, but not well enough, giving up 44 rushing yards while he was able to dink and dunk a bit too easily.

Enter Nathan Rourke, who tuned up on Rhode Island for 75 rushing yards and a score, and was razor-sharp with a 16-of-22 day for 188 yards and two scores through the air.

Why Pitt Will Win

This is when the Panther passing game has to get going.

Pitt will push with its ground attack – it has to start working for this season to turn around – but it has to start throwing to be ready for the Penn State game ahead. Kenny Pickett struggled – he barely hit half of his passes and threw two picks. However, there’s enough talent in the receiving corps to push a suspect Bobcat secondary.

Rhode Island got down and had to bomb its way to get back in the game – it didn’t work; the defense had too many problems – and was able to hit too many big plays.

Pickett has to open it up a bit, but the rushing attack should look and play a whole lot better than it did against the Cavaliers. The Bobcat defensive front will make its share of plays, but it should be able to get pounded on as the game goes on.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio is going to give the Panthers a whole lot of problems.

This is a sound veteran team with a quarterback in Rourke who knows what he’s doing with an offense that’s strong enough to come up with a huge performance. Pitt will survive and pull this out late – the running game will show up this week – but it’ll be pushed for a full four quarters.
