Pitch invader halts Barcelona vs Real Mallorca for Lionel Messi selfie despite no fans in stadium

Even when the coronavirus pandemic is still rife in some countries, some fans simply cannot resist catching a glimpse of Lionel Messi when Barcelona come to town.

The Catalan giants returned to action for the first time in three months against Real Mallorca following the suspension of LaLiga due to Covid-19.

There was a strange atmosphere at San Moix with only the players on the pitch and the odd chant from the PA system making a noise.

It appeared they were all alone inside the arena until early in the second half, a pitch invader sporting an Argentina national team jersey chose his moment.

The man boldly ran out onto the pitch during a brief stoppage in play with Jordi Alba only a few yards from the touchline, skipping calmly onto the pitch before taking out his phone and snapping a picture of himself and the Spain star.

He then bolted towards the centre circle where Messi was standing but was blocked by several match stewards.

Perhaps even more bizarre than the sight of a lone fan inside the arena was his insistence on respecting social distancing rules - having already broken the behind-closed-doors protocol - keeping a good two metres away from Messi while taking the photo.

Quite how the man managed to circumvent the club's security staff and stay hidden until the second half is anyone's guess, but it didn't last long as he eventually was carted off by security staff.

It didn't seem to affect Messi or Barcelona too much as Quique Setien's side rounded off an impressive performance with a 4-0 victory, with Messi laying on two goals for his team-mates and netting in injury time.
