Pistons select Washington's Isaiah Stewart with 16th overall pick in NBA draft

DETROIT — With their second first-round pick in the 2020 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons and first-year general manager Troy Weaver selected Isaiah Stewart, a center out of Washington, with the 16h overall pick.

The Pistons acquired the pick about an hour before the draft in a trade with the Houston Rockets. The pick was originally Portland's.

With their earlier first-round selection, the Pistons picked French point guard Killian Hayes at No. 7.

Weaver is known to favor players with good size for their positions, and both Hayes and Stewart illustrate his vision for what the future of Pistons basketball could look like.

Stewart averaged 17 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks as a freshman last season.

The Pistons enter free agency, which kicks off Friday at 6 p.m., with $30 million in cap space. The organization is expected to continue remaking its roster following a disappointing 20-46 season under second-year coach Dwane Casey, that saw them miss the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 seasons.

The Pistons have not won a playoff game since 2008, and have lost an NBA record 14 consecutive playoff games.
