Pistons land former Michigan player Glenn Robinson III

Glenn Robinson III's injury-marred season came at inopportune time.

It appears the Detroit Pistons are betting that he can recapture the form that made him a top-notch bench performer for the Indiana Pacers in 2016-17.

Two sources told the Free Press on Sunday that the Pistons have reached a two-year agreement with the former Michigan player on the first day of the league's annual free agency moratorium.

The deal is worth $8.3 million, with a team option of $4.3 million for the second season.

Players can't sign agreements until noon Friday. A source told the Free Press that Robinson, 24, was a top target among the group of small forwards available.

It is the first free agent signing under the front office directed by senior adviser Ed Stefanski.

Former team president and head coach Stan Van Gundy was fired in May.

It appears to be a solid addition. He had a good season in 2016-17 for the Pacers when he shot 39.2 percent from 3-point range. He won the NBA's slam dunk competition that season.

But he was limited to only 23 games last season because of a severely sprained left ankle.

The Pistons get a solid prospect with an option _ if they like him _ while maintaining future cap flexibility.

The 6-foot-7, 215-pound small forward played two seasons with Michigan and was drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He's the son of former NBA star Glenn Robinson.

Yahoo! Sports Shams Charania was first to report the news.
