Pirates pull away from Phillies for 6-3 victory

PITTSBURGH _ Adam Frazier and Francisco Cervelli each hit two-run singles in the sixth inning Saturday and the Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-3, at PNC Park.

David Freese had two hits, including a home run in the fourth.

Ivan Nova pitched into the eighth inning and allowed three runs. He struck out three without issuing a walk.

Andrew McCutchen's RBI single in the third tied the game at 1-1, and Freese's homer, his fourth of the season, broke the tie. The Pirates batted around in the sixth.

Freese walked with one out and John Jaso singled. Phillies catcher Cameron Rupp tried to back-pick Freese at second, but the ball hit Freese and bounced into right-center field. Both runners advanced to scoring position, which proved advantageous when Cervelli singled.

Jordy Mercer walked and Nova's grounder moved the runners over. Both scored on Frazier's single.

Fourteen of the 22 outs Nova recorded came via a ground ball. He kept the left side of his infield busy. Cesar Hernandez's leadoff single and Freddy Galvis' double resulted in a run in the first, but he did not allow another runner in scoring position until the seventh, when Rupp hit an RBI single. Aaron Altherr's eighth-inning RBI double drove Nova from the game.

Juan Nicasio recorded the final two outs of the inning with help from Freese, who dived to his left to stop Odubel Herrera's grounder with a runner on third. Tony Watson recorded the save.
