Pirates’ Drew Maggi hit with pitch-clock violation in first MLB at-bat after 13 seasons in the minors

After nearly one month of play during the 2023 season, Major League Baseball’s pitch clock has certainly made games faster. That being said, there are definitely wrinkles that can be ironed out.

On Wednesday, long-time minor leaguer Drew Maggi made his highly-anticipated MLB debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates at 33 years old. Maggi spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues before finally earning his first-ever MLB at-bat in the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Unfortunately, Maggi was tagged with a pitch-clock violation during his first MLB at-bat, a ruling which his Pirates teammates and the Pittsburgh faithful were none too happy about.

Maggi was eventually rung up on strikes to end his first plate appearance in the major leagues, but what an eventful one it was!
