Pirates' Cervelli to begin rehab assignment in Indianapolis

Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis tonight.

Cervelli had surgery June 11 to remove a fractured hook of the hamate bone in his left hand. He has been hitting in the cage and on the field, and catching simulated games.

Rehab assignments for position players last as long as 20 days, meaning Cervelli can return by Aug. 3 at the latest, though he will probably return before then. The club can also pause or cancel a rehab assignment.

Ryan Vogelsong will make another rehab start Monday for Class AA Altoona. He allowed three runs and six hits in five innings in his most recent rehab outing Sunday.
