Pipers have world record in the bag with AC/DC tribute

It's a long way to the top... if you wanna smash a bagpiping world record.

A crowd of 374 bagpipers in Melbourne's Federation Square has done just that with a tribute to rock legends AC/DC, ahead of their first Australian concert in a decade.

The piping world record had been held by a crowd of 333 pipers in the Bulgarian capital of Sophia since 2012.

But that record was ahem, blown away on Wednesday evening with a mass rendition of It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll) - and yes, it was very, very loud.

The pipers were surrounded by a crowd of thousands packed into Federation Square to witness the world record attempt.

The classic music video for It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll) was filmed on Swanston Street just metres away, with AC/DC on the back of a flatbed truck and three members of the Rats of Tobruk Pipe Band.

One of those pipers was 80 year old Les Kenfield, who was on hand to help break the world record half a century later.

He still remembers the late AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott coming to his pipe band to try and learn the famously challenging musical instrument.

"He's the one who said, when we're doing the video would you guys like to come along and join in? I was one of them, and that's it," he said.

"As it turns out, that song has become an iconic song worldwide for such a long time."

Brother and sister pipers Jason and Tegan had dusted off their bagpipes after a decade to join the world record attempt, and said the crowd was "fantastic".

Many wore AC/DC tshirts and kilts, while many younger pipers were in their school uniforms.

Year eight student Georgia Hasthorpe, 13, started taking bagpipe lessons in 2025 with encouragement from her mum.

"This is my first gig and I'm really excited for it," she said.

The hardest part is keeping the bag full of air while playing the pipes at the same time, the AC/DC fan explained.

The long-awaited Australian leg of AC/DC's Power Up tour starts at the MCG Wednesday night, with hits including Highway to Hell, Back in Black, Thunderstruck, T.N.T. and You Shook Me All Night Long.

The support act for the Australian tour, Amyl and The Sniffers, will play a free gig at Federation Square on Friday.

But will they be as loud as 374 bagpipes?
