Pioneering black journalist dies

Nancy Hicks Maynard, the first African-American woman to own a major daily newspaper in the US, has died aged 61. She was a co-publisher, with her husband, of the Oakland Tribune in California and a leading advocate of diversity in newsrooms. She began her journalism career in the mid-1960s at the New York Post and later became the first black female reporter at The New York Times. She and her husband, Robert, helped found a nonprofit institute to train minority journalists. (Sources: Richard Prince/New York Post)
