What’s Going To Happen
It’s the first game of the year for both teams expected to finish somewhere in the middle of the Pioneer pack – the loser of this will have an uphill climb ahead.
Both teams need to find some semblance of an offense after a rough 2019, but Valparaiso brings more defense. The Crusaders have the returning players up front to get into the backfield a bit more, but Butler has the stronger offensive line.
Both teams get back their starting quarterbacks, but neither team’s passing game was anything to get fired up over.
The two are relatively even – Butler won 24-21 a few years ago. – but Valpo should be slightly stronger defensively, will be stronger on third downs. At home, though, the Bulldogs will grind their way through in an entertaining game despite the lack of fireworks.

What’s Going To Happen
Davidson dropped the opener to Elon in a tight defensive 26-23 game, but it’s got the offense to do a whole lot more. The attack fell flat in the second half, but QB Tyler Phelps wasn’t bad and the ground game rolled for 267 yards with the 1-2 punch of Coy Williams and Dylan Sparks going off.
The Wildcats were able to roll over Stetson 42-14 two years ago, but they’re not doing that again – the Hatters should be stronger on the defensive front.
Davidson has the game under its belt and played like it needed a tune-up, and now the O should start to roll against a Stetson team that will get its share of yards on the ground. The Hatters won’t have the offense to keep up.

What’s Going To Happen
Don’t look into the Morehead State 52-0 loss to James Madison too much. That’s the No. 1 team that blasted the Eagles.
The offense didn’t work, the running game didn’t go anywhere, and it was ugly from the start. However, the offense should be far better as the season goes on, especially against a Presbyterian defense that’s a newbie to the Pioneer world.
The Blue Hose lost to Gardner-Webb 31-24 in an overtime thriller, but on the plus side, QB Tyler Huff was fantastic with Keith Person catching ten passes for 133 yards.
However, expect Morehead State to bounce back from the lousy first performance with the ground game working from the start and the defense holding down the Blue Hose rushing attack to a halt.

What’s Going To Happen
The winner won’t necessarily own the Pioneer League – it’s still early – but it’ll be the star of the conference in a battle between what should be the two best teams.
The Toreros have to make a few replacements, but the offensive line should be the best in the league – it’ll be strong in pass protection, and the the defense has the pieces to more than hold serve. The offense is great at controlling the clock and the tempo – it’s about to do that again.
Drake won’t have enough defense to hold serve even though the offense and ground game will be stronger than two years ago. San Diego will be in for a big battle, but it’ll go on a few long late drives to come through with a terrific road win.
