Pint-sized Gateshead micro-pub to open despite fears from locals

A new micro-pub is set to open in Low Fell despite residents' parking fears.

Gateshead Council's licensing sub committee gave Gary Harding permission to open his pint-size boozer on Durham Road after he explained that he would be aiming towards a more discerning clientele.

"All our pricing is quite expensive, it is all premium stuff," he said.

"It's an upmarket gin bar, in our Whitley Bay bar no-one under 40 comes in, we have tables, it's a nice atmosphere, everyone sits round and chats, it has got a little buzz.

"We don't have the space to have live music on."

Two concerned residents attended Monday's planning meeting to raise concerns that the bar would cause more people to park on nearby Deanwell Avenue.

Colin Wilkinson said: "People are going to come in cars, I know the drink and drive thing, but people are still going to be parking.

"It is going to be a nightmare."

Geoff Innis added: "Customers are going to be parking in the street and there is going to be banging doors late at night."

Despite this, the committee gave the pub permission to open from 11am to 11pm Monday to Thursday, 11am to midnight Friday and Saturday and 11am to 10pm on Sunday.
