Pink fog descends over London: Unusual weather phenomenon gives capital an eerie glow

A strange pink fog descended over London and other parts of the UK on Wednesday morning.

The skies were filled with a rare rose colour, which meteorologists at the Met Office have explained is due to sunlight passing through fine layers in the air, such as moisture or dust.

Graham Madge, spokesperson for the Met Office, told the Daily Mail: “When the sunlight comes through lots of layers, it filters out the blue and scatters it, leaving the red to come through,

“It’s effectively a sunrise filtered through the atmosphere and through the fog, giving it that pinkish hue.”

The glorious sight was shared by impressed bystanders on social media.

One onlooker described the skies as closely resembling candy floss. He wrote on X: “Pink fog today in London. So strange.

“Going out for a run in a bit. Looks like I'm running through candy floss!”

Another expressed her shock at this unusual weather phenomenon, describing it as “absolutely amazing”.

She wrote: “Never seen coloured fog like this before - absolutely amazing!”

It was also visible in Oxfordshire where the below image was taken in Dunsden.

Pink fog depends on local conditions, and Mr Madge explains that it can be easily missed.

When the fog previously settled in parts of southwest England in 2019, Mr Madge told The Sun that the chances of seeing it “will depend on the local conditions.”

He added, “And those conditions were optimal for a few lucky people to have witnessed it.”
