Pinhole surgery of brain less invasive

LUCKNOW: A minimally invasive pinhole surgery of brain aneurysm — blood-filled balloon-like bulge in the wall of brain’s blood vessel — was recently performed at Medanta Hospital.

Performed by interventional radiology experts Dr Rohit Agarwal and Dr Gaurav Chauhan with the support of other team members, the advantage of this technique of surgery is that it does not have to open a large part of the head i.e. the skull during the surgery. It not only cuts short hospital stay of patients, but also reduces risk of infection.

Instead of open brain surgery in which whole skull or any skull bone has to be removed, under the pinhole technique, a hole is made in the groin or any other area from where a catheter is inserted to reach right up to the brain’s part where aneurysm is located and deposit material there before closing it from inside. The process is called ‘Coiling’, said doctors.

The problem of brain aneurysm is found in 2-3% of people. The condition can be fatal if a brain aneurysm ruptures as internal bleeding can cause severe headache, vomiting, loss of consciousness. It has mortality rate up to 15 %.
