Pilots showcase their skills to land during Storm Ellen as strong winds batter Manchester Airport

Pilots showcased their skills during tricky conditions at Manchester Airport as Storm Ellen battered the city.

Strong winds of about 40mph made their job more difficult this afternoon.

Footage taken from Ringway shows an Emirates plane having to land sideways.

It also showed several aircraft rocking from side to side as the gusts took effect.

Pilots from RyanAir, Scandanavian Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Easyjet, and Jet 2 were among those featured in footage captured by the YouTube Channel Aviation Up Close.

A yellow warning for wind had been been in force, with the Met Office saying it felt like autumn rather than the summer for many today.

The wind warning has now passed, but it is expected to rain in many places across Greater Manchester tomorrow.

It comes as Manchester Airport earlier announced it would temporarily close Terminal 2 again.

The terminal was shut in March due to a 'significant fall' in passenger numbers amid the coronavirus pandemic, but had then re-opened in July.
