Pilot taken to hospital after chopper crashes into powerlines

The helicopter crashed near Naracoorte on Wednesday afternoon.

A helicopter has crashed in South Australia's south-east this afternoon, SA Police has confirmed.

The helicopter came into contact with powerlines during the crash, which happened about 2:30pm.

Emergency services responded to the incident and SA Police said the pilot was taken to Naracoorte Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Country Fire Service also travelled to the scene at West Road near Bool Lagoon, outside of Naracoorte.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the incident involved a Robinson R-44, a four-seat light helicopter commonly used in regional Australia.

Limestone Coast Police Superintendent Phil Hoff said he understood the helicopter was involved in the spraying of vegetation around Bool Lagoon at the time.

"It appears to have come into contact with powerlines, brought some powerlines down, crashed into the ground," he said.

The incident came a day after a crash claimed two lives in the same region.

Police charged a man with two counts of death by dangerous driving over the crash on Lucindale Road, approximately 25 kilometres west of Naracoorte, just before 12:45pm on Tuesday.

The collision sparked a fire which incinerated both vehicles.

On Tuesday night, police confirmed a 60-year-old man, who was driving the SUV, and a 49-year-old woman, who was a passenger, died at the scene.

Both were from Kingston SE.
