Pilot's lucky escape after plane is destroyed in crash at Nottingham Airport

A pilot lost control of their plane while landing at Nottingham Airport - but managed to walk away with no injuries.

It happened at 2pm on October 22 while the pilot was conducting takeoffs and landings to maintain their licence at the Tollerton Lane site.

Two of these attempts were without incident but on the third disaster struck when the Piper PA-28R-201T Turbo Cherokee Arrow III plane "became uncontrollable" and struck the ground.

The plane was damaged beyond repair, according to an investigation into the crash by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

The one passenger on the plane had "minor" injuries.

Details in the report said: "On the third landing, the aircraft touched down on Runway 21 ‘on the numbers’; the pilot reduced flap to two stages and selected full throttle.

"Directional control was lost, and the aircraft veered off the runway to the left and became airborne just as the propeller contacted rough ground.

"The aircraft became difficult to control and the pilot flew a low downwind leg to return to the airfield. Once within the airfield boundary, the aircraft became uncontrollable and it struck the ground just north of Runway 27 incurring substantial damage.

"Both pilot and passenger were wearing lap and diagonal harnesses and only the passenger suffered minor injuries.

"The reason for the loss of directional control is not known."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 2.17pm and sent three engines as a precaution.

A spokesman for the fire service said appliances from the Carlton, West Bridgford and Stockhill stations attended.

Nottingham Airport did not wish to provide a further comment on the crash.
